Recommended enchanted book planning

An enchanted book page is different from a normal item page because the book is usually a staging tool, not the final goal. The best plan starts with the item that will receive the book, then groups compatible enchantments into balanced branches. Good book planning prevents one overloaded book from carrying all the hidden history into the final item.

Recommended set

  • MendingUse Mending books deliberately on long-term gear instead of attaching them late to already expensive items.
  • UnbreakingPair Unbreaking with other support enchantments when it helps keep the final item branch balanced.
  • EfficiencyBuild high-level Efficiency books carefully because repeated low-level combines can add heavy history.
  • SharpnessKeep damage books separate until the final sword or axe damage choice is settled.

Planning priority

  1. Name the final item before combining books that happen to fit together.
  2. Check conflicts before creating a staged book that cannot be used.
  3. Pair books in balanced groups instead of feeding everything into one growing book.
  4. Test the final item combine before spending rare books in-game.

Conflict warnings

  • Loot books may contain powerful but incompatible enchantments, so a full book is not automatically a useful book.
  • A book built through many small combines can be worse than a cleaner lower-effort source book.

Least XP vs Least Prior Work

Least XP
Use Least XP when preparing a simple staged book for an item you will finish immediately.
Least Prior Work
Use Least Prior Work when preparing books for rare gear, netherite tools, or items that may need future edits.

Planning notes

  • Minecraft adds prior work penalty every time an item goes through an anvil, so balanced combine trees usually cost less.
  • Conflicting enchantments cannot be applied together unless the workbench compatibility override is enabled.
  • Keep the final combine under the Too Expensive cap by testing the full set before spending levels in-game.
