Minecraft Enchantment Tool

Looting enchantment

Use this Looting enchantment page to confirm max level 3, compatible items, conflicts, and how to plan the anvil order before Too Expensive appears.

Looting

Max level

Looting can be applied up to level 3. Use that cap when planning books, item combines, and final anvil cost.

Level 3

Compatible items

Looting works with these items in the catalog. Open an item page to start from that item and compare full builds.

Incompatible enchantments

These enchantments conflict with Looting in normal survival rules.

No incompatible enchantments in the catalog.

Looting planning notes

Looting increases drop value from mobs, which makes it one of the defining sword enchantments. It is often worth protecting with a clean route because the benefit is practical across farms, hunting, and rare drop attempts. The sword should be planned around Looting early, not after every damage and utility book is already attached.

When it is worth using

Use Looting on a main sword, farm sword, or rare-drop sword. It is especially useful when the weapon is used for wither skeleton skulls, ender pearls, mob drops, or general survival supplies.

Tradeoffs and conflicts

Looting has no major conflict in the catalog, but it can be made expensive by an old sword or a messy damage book. Fire Aspect can also change drops or combat behavior, so it should be considered separately.

Best pairings

  • SharpnessSharpness and Looting form the usual general-purpose sword core.
  • MendingMending keeps a valuable Looting sword useful after many fights.
  • UnbreakingUnbreaking reduces wear during farm or hunting sessions.

Example planning note

Pair Looting with the chosen damage enchantment or a clean support branch, then test optional Fire Aspect later. If Looting III is rare in your world, keep it out of experimental chains until the final sword plan is clear.

Anvil planning notes

  • Add Looting after checking every compatible item and conflict, especially when the build already has high prior work penalty.
  • Minecraft raises anvil cost every time an item or book is worked, so balanced combine trees help keep the final step cheaper.
  • Test the complete set in the workbench before spending levels in-game to reduce Too Expensive risk.
