Soul Speed planning guide

Soul Speed is one of the few boot enchantments that can wear the boots down through normal movement on its matching blocks. That changes the planning priority. If the boots are for Nether roads, soul soil paths, or base infrastructure, Unbreaking and Mending are not decoration; they keep the travel pair alive. Do not waste a rare book on boots you will replace soon, and do not treat the pair as ordinary errands gear before the build is finished. A good pair should have a clear travel job and a repair source before you start using it on every trip.

Compatible items and setup

Soul Speed belongs on boots used for soul sand and soul soil routes, especially in the Nether or in custom travel corridors. It is rare enough that the target boots should be chosen carefully, and it benefits strongly from Unbreaking and Mending because movement use can pressure durability.

Best survival use

Choose it for Nether travel, soul soil paths, base infrastructure, or routes where speed over soul blocks saves real time. It is less important on boots that rarely touch those blocks or already have a conflicting movement purpose in your gear rotation.

Conflicts and tradeoffs

Soul Speed has no direct conflict in this catalog, but it competes for boot budget with protection, Feather Falling, Frost Walker or Depth Strider choices, and long-term Unbreaking or Mending.

Anvil order notes

Plan Soul Speed with Unbreaking and Mending early, then fit the boot's protection and movement choices around that plan. If the boots already have a heavy history, test a cleaner base before committing the rare book.

Common mistakes

  • Placing Soul Speed on the first available boots, then later needing a stronger pair for real Nether travel.
  • Ignoring durability pressure and using the boots constantly without Mending, repairs, or a clear replacement plan.

In survival, protect the boots before treating them as everyday gear. A rare pair worn through random errands can lose durability before the Nether plan that justified the enchantment is even finished.

Anvil planning notes

  • Add Soul Speed after checking every compatible item and conflict, especially when the build already has high prior work penalty.
  • Minecraft raises anvil cost every time an item or book is worked, so balanced combine trees help keep the final step cheaper.
  • Test the complete set in the workbench before spending levels in-game to reduce Too Expensive risk.
