Punch enchantment
Use this Punch enchantment page to confirm max level 2, compatible items, conflicts, and how to plan the anvil order before Too Expensive appears.
Quick answer
Punch is a bow behavior choice. Some players love the extra space against creepers, pillagers, and open-field mobs. Other players remove it from farm bows because pushed targets leave the kill zone or make drops awkward to collect. The right answer depends on where the bow gets used. Decide whether the bow is for travel safety, cliffs, and plains, or for controlled fights where targets should stay close. If you already plan Power, Flame, Mending, or Infinity, test Punch as an optional behavior before it becomes an expensive final combine.
Best use
Choose it for open-field safety, creeper spacing, or fights where distance is more valuable than keeping the target close. It is less useful in tight rooms, farms, or situations where pushing a mob away makes the next shot harder. Players who fight from walls, ridges, or open plains usually enjoy Punch more than players who build compact mob systems.

Punch planning guide
Compatible items and setup
Punch belongs on a bow when the weapon should push targets away and create breathing room. It can pair with Power for damage, Flame for fire utility, and Unbreaking or Mending, while the wider bow plan still has to decide between Mending and Infinity.
Conflicts and tradeoffs
Punch has no direct conflict in this catalog, but the tradeoff is positional. Knockback can prevent damage, yet it can also scatter mobs, push drops into bad spots, or break a controlled farm pattern.
Anvil order notes
Plan Punch as an optional bow behavior, not a required final step. Stage it with Power, Flame if wanted, and Unbreaking or Mending only after the Mending or Infinity decision is settled.
Common mistakes
- Putting Punch on a farm bow and then wondering why mobs no longer stay in the exact kill zone.
- Treating Punch as free utility when the final bow already has enough expensive books to risk a bad last combine.
In survival, keep a second bow or melee weapon for close spaces. Punch feels excellent on cliffs and plains, but it can be awkward in caves where every pushed mob may land behind blocks or near lava.
Anvil planning notes
- Add Punch after checking every compatible item and conflict, especially when the build already has high prior work penalty.
- Minecraft raises anvil cost every time an item or book is worked, so balanced combine trees help keep the final step cheaper.
- Test the complete set in the workbench before spending levels in-game to reduce Too Expensive risk.
