Minecraft Enchantment Tool
Protection enchantment
Use this Protection enchantment page to confirm max level 4, compatible items, conflicts, and how to plan the anvil order before Too Expensive appears.
Protection
Max level
Protection can be applied up to level 4. Use that cap when planning books, item combines, and final anvil cost.
Compatible items
Protection works with these items in the catalog. Open an item page to start from that item and compare full builds.
Incompatible enchantments
These enchantments conflict with Protection in normal survival rules.
Protection planning notes
Protection is the general-purpose armor choice. It is popular because it helps across many damage situations instead of specializing in fire, blasts, or projectiles. Since protection variants conflict, the armor set should have a clear survival role before books are staged.
When it is worth using
Use Protection on everyday armor, especially when the set is meant for general mining, exploration, building, and combat. It is a strong default for players who do not want several specialized armor sets.
Tradeoffs and conflicts
Protection conflicts with Fire Protection, Blast Protection, and Projectile Protection. Specialized sets can be better for one environment, but mixing decisions randomly makes the anvil route harder to manage and can waste clean books.
Best pairings
- UnbreakingUnbreaking helps armor survive constant durability pressure.
- MendingMending makes a Protection set easier to keep long term.
- Feather FallingFeather Falling on boots complements Protection by covering a major survival risk.
Example planning note
Plan each armor slot separately. Add slot utility such as Respiration or Feather Falling after the protection family is chosen, then test whether durability support belongs on the same branch.
Anvil planning notes
- Add Protection after checking every compatible item and conflict, especially when the build already has high prior work penalty.
- Minecraft raises anvil cost every time an item or book is worked, so balanced combine trees help keep the final step cheaper.
- Test the complete set in the workbench before spending levels in-game to reduce Too Expensive risk.
