Piercing enchantment
Use this Piercing enchantment page to confirm max level 4, compatible items, conflicts, and how to plan the anvil order before Too Expensive appears.
Piercing
Max level
Piercing can be applied up to level 4. Use that cap when planning books, item combines, and final anvil cost.
Compatible items
Piercing works with these items in the catalog. Open an item page to start from that item and compare full builds.
Incompatible enchantments
These enchantments conflict with Piercing in normal survival rules.
Piercing planning guide
Piercing rewards a different crossbow player than Multishot. You want targets lined up, corridors that guide mobs, or a raid angle where one shot can keep moving through enemies. It can also change how arrow recovery feels, which matters when ammunition is limited. The enchantment is not stronger just because the level number goes higher. It is stronger when your fights give it lines to use, and weaker when every fight happens in open scattered terrain. Before building the final crossbow, picture where you will stand and whether a second target will actually sit behind the first.
Compatible items and setup
Piercing belongs on a crossbow that should reward lined-up targets and controlled shots. It pairs well with Quick Charge for reload speed and with Unbreaking or Mending for repeated combat, but it asks for a different play style than a spread crossbow.
Best survival use
Choose it when you fight in corridors, raids, chokepoints, or farms where targets line up and a precise shot can pass through multiple enemies. It is best for players who aim deliberately rather than relying on broad coverage. If your base has hallways, gates, or raid lanes, Piercing can feel much better there than it does in open fields.
Conflicts and tradeoffs
Piercing conflicts with Multishot, so the tradeoff is line control versus spread control. It also changes how arrow recovery can feel, which matters if ammunition management is part of your plan.
Anvil order notes
Commit to Piercing before staging Quick Charge and durability books. If the crossbow already has Multishot or a long repair history, start over with a cleaner base instead of trying to force the wrong job.
Common mistakes
- Choosing Piercing because the level number looks larger, then using it in fights where no targets ever align.
- Keeping both Piercing and Multishot books in the same combine plan too long, wasting planning time on an item that cannot hold both.
In survival, build or choose terrain that helps targets line up. A Piercing crossbow is less impressive when every fight happens in open, scattered terrain where no second target sits behind the first.
Anvil planning notes
- Add Piercing after checking every compatible item and conflict, especially when the build already has high prior work penalty.
- Minecraft raises anvil cost every time an item or book is worked, so balanced combine trees help keep the final step cheaper.
- Test the complete set in the workbench before spending levels in-game to reduce Too Expensive risk.
