Mending enchantment

Use this Mending enchantment page to confirm max level 1, compatible items, conflicts, and how to plan the anvil order before Too Expensive appears.

Mending

Max level

Mending can be applied up to level 1. Use that cap when planning books, item combines, and final anvil cost.

Level 1

Compatible items

Mending works with these items in the catalog. Open an item page to start from that item and compare full builds.

Incompatible enchantments

These enchantments conflict with Mending in normal survival rules.

Mending planning notes

Mending repairs the item with experience, so it is most valuable on gear that you expect to keep. It does not make the first combine free; it protects the finished item from repeated anvil repairs. Because it can conflict with Infinity on bows, the decision should be made before the rest of the route is staged.

When it is worth using

Use Mending when durability is the long-term problem: main tools, armor, elytra, tridents, and expensive weapons. It is strongest when you have steady XP from mining, trading, farms, or normal play, and when replacing the item would cost rare books or rare drops.

Tradeoffs and conflicts

Mending needs experience to work, and on bows it blocks Infinity. It also does not erase prior work that already exists. Adding Mending late to a heavily repaired item can still be expensive, so plan it as part of the main build rather than as an emergency fix.

Best pairings

  • UnbreakingUnbreaking reduces durability loss, giving Mending fewer repairs to cover.
  • EfficiencyEfficiency plus Mending makes work tools faster without shortening their useful life.
  • ProtectionProtection armor with Mending is easier to maintain as a long-term survival set.

Example planning note

For a valuable pickaxe or elytra, test a route where Mending is paired with Unbreaking before the final item step. If the item already has repair history, compare the current item against a clean replacement before committing the Mending book.

Anvil planning notes

  • Add Mending after checking every compatible item and conflict, especially when the build already has high prior work penalty.
  • Minecraft raises anvil cost every time an item or book is worked, so balanced combine trees help keep the final step cheaper.
  • Test the complete set in the workbench before spending levels in-game to reduce Too Expensive risk.
