Sweeping

Max level

Sweeping can be applied up to level 3. Use that cap when planning books, item combines, and final anvil cost.

Level 3

Compatible items

Sweeping works with these items in the catalog. Open an item page to start from that item and compare full builds.

Incompatible enchantments

These enchantments conflict with Sweeping in normal survival rules.

No incompatible enchantments in the catalog.

Sweeping planning guide

Sweeping is useful when the sword is supposed to handle groups. It is less useful when the sword must hit one target cleanly, such as a farm mob, a delicate setup, or a fight near neutral mobs. Plan it after the main damage choice, because Sharpness, Smite, or Bane of Arthropods defines the sword more than optional area behavior. If your version or server changes sweeping behavior, test the result before using your best books. The enchantment is at its best in open fights and at its worst when one accidental side hit creates cleanup.

Compatible items and setup

Sweeping belongs on a sword that is meant to handle groups and benefit from sweeping damage behavior. It pairs naturally with a chosen damage enchantment, Looting where drops matter, and Unbreaking or Mending for a weapon used through long combat sessions.

Best survival use

Choose it for mob groups, raids, and general sword use where hitting nearby enemies is helpful. It is less attractive when single-target precision matters, such as controlled farms, delicate mob handling, or fights where nearby neutral mobs must not be touched. If you often fight in villages, trading halls, or pet-filled bases, test the behavior before adding it to your favorite sword.

Conflicts and tradeoffs

Sweeping has no direct conflict in this catalog, but the tradeoff is area behavior. More group damage can be excellent in open fights and frustrating anywhere the sword must hit only one target.

Anvil order notes

Decide the sword's damage job first, then stage Sweeping with Looting, Unbreaking or Mending, and optional Fire Aspect or Knockback only if they fit the role. Apply the final staged book after checking the full plan.

Common mistakes

  • Adding Sweeping to a sword used mainly for precise single-target farm kills, then fighting the area behavior every session.
  • Building optional sword books before choosing Sharpness, Smite, or Bane of Arthropods as the core damage plan.

In survival, watch what stands beside your target. Sweeping damage can change mob positions, affect farm reliability, or create accidental hits when fighting near villagers, pets, or neutral mobs.

Anvil planning notes

  • Add Sweeping after checking every compatible item and conflict, especially when the build already has high prior work penalty.
  • Minecraft raises anvil cost every time an item or book is worked, so balanced combine trees help keep the final step cheaper.
  • Test the complete set in the workbench before spending levels in-game to reduce Too Expensive risk.
