Minecraft Enchantment Tool

Unbreaking enchantment

Use this Unbreaking enchantment page to confirm max level 3, compatible items, conflicts, and how to plan the anvil order before Too Expensive appears.

Unbreaking

Max level

Unbreaking can be applied up to level 3. Use that cap when planning books, item combines, and final anvil cost.

Level 3

Compatible items

Unbreaking works with these items in the catalog. Open an item page to start from that item and compare full builds.

Incompatible enchantments

These enchantments conflict with Unbreaking in normal survival rules.

No incompatible enchantments in the catalog.

Unbreaking planning notes

Unbreaking reduces how often an item loses durability, which makes it useful on almost every important tool, weapon, and armor piece. It is not flashy, but it protects the investment you made in the rest of the build. Because it fits many items, it is easy to add late; planning it early is usually safer.

When it is worth using

Use Unbreaking on main tools, armor, weapons, elytra, tridents, and crossbows that will see repeated use. It is especially valuable on items with rare source books or items that are difficult to replace.

Tradeoffs and conflicts

Unbreaking has no major conflict, but it can still raise anvil cost if added after the item has already collected history. Treat it as a core support enchantment instead of a final cleanup step.

Best pairings

  • MendingMending and Unbreaking together reduce both repair demand and repair frequency.
  • EfficiencyEfficiency tools burn durability faster through heavy use, so Unbreaking helps them last.
  • ProtectionProtection armor with Unbreaking is easier to keep in service across long fights.

Example planning note

Stage Unbreaking with Mending or another support book, then test whether that branch should meet the item before or after the main performance enchantment. This keeps durability support from becoming a costly afterthought.

Anvil planning notes

  • Add Unbreaking after checking every compatible item and conflict, especially when the build already has high prior work penalty.
  • Minecraft raises anvil cost every time an item or book is worked, so balanced combine trees help keep the final step cheaper.
  • Test the complete set in the workbench before spending levels in-game to reduce Too Expensive risk.
