Recommended axe enchantments
An axe can be a chopping tool, a weapon, or a hybrid. That mixed identity is the main planning risk. A work axe usually cares about Efficiency, Unbreaking, Mending, and sometimes Fortune or Silk Touch. A combat axe may add Sharpness or another damage route. Decide the role first so the anvil route is not pulled in two directions.
Recommended set
- EfficiencyUse Efficiency for a work axe because chopping speed is the main practical upgrade.
- SharpnessAdd Sharpness only when the axe is meant to double as a weapon.
- FortuneUse Fortune for leaf or crop-adjacent utility, but keep it separate from Silk Touch planning.
- Silk TouchUse Silk Touch when preserving blocks matters more than extra drops.
- MendingPlan Mending before the axe collects repair history from heavy chopping sessions.
Planning priority
- Choose work axe, combat axe, or hybrid before selecting source books.
- Resolve Fortune versus Silk Touch if the axe will be used for utility drops.
- Stage Efficiency and durability support first, then test damage books only when needed.
- Keep optional combat upgrades off a simple work axe if they push the route too high.
Conflict warnings
- Fortune and Silk Touch conflict, and the main sword-style damage enchantments conflict with each other.
- A hybrid axe can become expensive faster than two simpler axes with clearer jobs.
Least XP vs Least Prior Work
- Least XP
- Use Least XP when building a practical chopping axe that is unlikely to receive more anvil work.
- Least Prior Work
- Use Least Prior Work when the axe is a netherite tool or a hybrid weapon you may keep for a long time.
Planning notes
- Minecraft adds prior work penalty every time an item goes through an anvil, so balanced combine trees usually cost less.
- Conflicting enchantments cannot be applied together unless the workbench compatibility override is enabled.
- Keep the final combine under the Too Expensive cap by testing the full set before spending levels in-game.
