Chestplate

Compatible enchantments

Chestplate can use these enchantments in the calculator. Open an enchantment page for details, then return here to compare build orders.

Recommended chestplate enchantments

A chestplate is usually the simplest main armor piece, which makes it easy to overcomplicate. Protection, Unbreaking, and Mending cover most survival needs. Thorns can be useful for aggressive armor, but it should be treated as optional because it changes durability pressure and can raise cost. A clean chestplate route should stay focused.

Recommended set

  • ProtectionUse Protection as the default survival choice unless the chestplate belongs to a specialized set.
  • UnbreakingUse Unbreaking to slow durability loss on the armor piece that absorbs frequent damage.
  • MendingAdd Mending early in the plan so the chestplate can avoid repeated anvil repairs.
  • ThornsTreat Thorns as a deliberate combat choice rather than a default upgrade.

Planning priority

  1. Resolve the protection type first, then stage durability support.
  2. Compare Protection plus Mending against Protection plus Unbreaking as the first book branch.
  3. Test Thorns separately and remove it if it makes the final step risky.
  4. Avoid repairing the chestplate before its final enchantment route is complete.

Conflict warnings

  • Protection variants conflict, so do not mix specialized protection books on one chestplate.
  • Thorns can be useful, but it makes durability planning more important on a long-term armor piece.

Least XP vs Least Prior Work

Least XP
Use Least XP when finishing a straightforward chestplate that will not receive more anvil changes.
Least Prior Work
Use Least Prior Work for a main armor piece that will be worn constantly and repaired through the world.

Planning notes

  • Minecraft adds prior work penalty every time an item goes through an anvil, so balanced combine trees usually cost less.
  • Conflicting enchantments cannot be applied together unless the workbench compatibility override is enabled.
  • Keep the final combine under the Too Expensive cap by testing the full set before spending levels in-game.
