Recommended sword enchantments
A sword is usually the general-purpose weapon that carries your best combat books, so the build should be planned before any rare book touches the anvil. Decide the damage enchantment first, then protect the route for Looting, Unbreaking, and Mending. Fire Aspect, Knockback, and Sweeping Edge can be useful, but they should not force a clean sword into an expensive final combine.
Recommended set
- SharpnessUse Sharpness as the default damage route unless the sword is dedicated to undead or arthropod targets.
- LootingAdd Looting early in the plan because drop value is one of the main reasons to invest in a sword.
- UnbreakingPair Unbreaking with Mending or another support book so durability does not become an afterthought.
- MendingUse Mending on a long-term sword, especially when the source books are rare or expensive to replace.
- Fire AspectTreat Fire Aspect as optional if farms, enderman fights, or route cost make burning targets inconvenient.
Planning priority
- Choose Sharpness, Smite, or Bane of Arthropods before staging any damage book.
- Pair the damage book with Looting, then stage durability support on a separate branch.
- Test optional Fire Aspect, Knockback, or Sweeping Edge only after the core route is safe.
- Copy the calculator's left-right order exactly when applying the final staged book to the sword.
Conflict warnings
- Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods conflict, so changing that decision late can waste the whole damage branch.
- A sword repaired several times before enchanting may be more dangerous than a fresh base item with the same books.
Least XP vs Least Prior Work
- Least XP
- Use Least XP when you only need the sword finished now and do not expect more anvil work after the final combine.
- Least Prior Work
- Use Least Prior Work for a main weapon you may rename, repair, or adjust later, even if the current level cost is slightly higher.
Planning notes
- Minecraft adds prior work penalty every time an item goes through an anvil, so balanced combine trees usually cost less.
- Conflicting enchantments cannot be applied together unless the workbench compatibility override is enabled.
- Keep the final combine under the Too Expensive cap by testing the full set before spending levels in-game.
