Anvil XP cost is not one single number pulled from the enchantment list. It is the result of enchantment value, prior work, side order, repairs, and compatibility rules. Understanding those pieces makes calculator results easier to trust. You do not need to memorize the entire formula, but you do need to respect the parts that change a route from cheap to impossible.

A task above 39 levels is rejected as Too Expensive in normal survival play.
What contributes to anvil cost
A combine can charge for adding enchantments, raising enchantment levels, renaming, repairing, and carrying prior work from both sides. Higher-level enchantments and certain enchantment types tend to matter more. If the item or book has already been worked, the cost rises before the new upgrade is even considered.
This means the same visible enchantment list can have different costs in different worlds or even in different chests in the same world. A clean villager book, a table result, and a hand-built book may all say the same enchantment level, but the route that created them changes how safe the final combine feels.
This is why a simple-looking combine can be expensive. The visible step might be adding Mending, but the real cost may include a sword that was repaired twice and a book that was built from several earlier books. The anvil remembers the history even when the interface does not explain it clearly.
Side order can matter
The left and right slots are not just visual. In many anvil situations, the item on the left is the base being modified, and the item on the right is the sacrifice. Swapping sides can change whether the result is valid or how the cost is calculated. A planner should preserve the suggested side order when you copy steps into the game.
When a calculator result says to combine one staged book with another, follow the order instead of treating the pair as interchangeable. If you change sides in-game and see a different level cost, return to the plan and check whether the side order was part of the cheaper route.
Conflicts and max levels
Conflicting enchantments can block a combine entirely in normal survival rules. Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods are one common conflict set. Fortune and Silk Touch are another. Mending and Infinity are a major bow decision. Protection variants also conflict on armor pieces.
Max levels matter because combining lower-level books can raise a level only up to the cap. Building Efficiency V from smaller books is possible, but those smaller combines add history. Sometimes a clean high-level source book is worth more than a pile of cheap low-level books because it saves prior work.
Repairs are part of the same system
Repairing with materials or another item can add prior work just like an enchantment combine. This is easy to overlook because repair feels like maintenance, not build planning. If you repair an item several times before adding final enchantments, the real build may become expensive sooner than expected.
Mending changes that calculation. A Mending item can often avoid future anvil repairs, but adding Mending late still has a cost. Plan Mending as part of the build instead of waiting until the item is already old and expensive.
Using cost mechanics without doing all the math
You do not need to memorize every cost formula to make better decisions. The practical rules are enough: choose conflicts early, use clean books, balance book combines, avoid unnecessary repairs, preserve side order, and test the full route before spending levels.
When a plan fails, diagnose the source instead of rerolling randomly. Check whether the base item was repaired, whether a high-level book was built from many smaller books, whether the side order changed, or whether an optional enchantment is pushing the build over the limit. Most fixes come from one of those practical details.
The calculator is there to handle the search. Your job is to give it accurate inputs and then use the result carefully in-game. If a result looks high, the cause is usually history, source book quality, or an optional enchantment that is pushing the build beyond what the anvil can comfortably support.
